Fine-Tuned #2 - MAY-A

Introducing MAY-A, the nineteen year old pop star giving us hits that could fit right into the soundtrack of your favourite coming of age films. She admits that she would love for her music to be featured in the classic rom-com ‘Ten Things I Hate About You’… but quickly laughs and admits it would most likely be found in something like ‘A Cinderella Story’ something real cheesy.

MAY-A put herself on the map with her breakout hit ‘Apricots’ and has been trailblazing with each release ever since. Today she shows us more of her incredible pop penmanship, and releases her most recent track ‘Swing of Things’. The song explores the mind-racing feelings most people experience after a break-up, dealing with self-doubt and the feelings of confusion that come with wanting things to go back to normal – followed by learning to live life by yourself, allowing yourself time to heal.

For any musician, 2020 was an extremely difficult year, yet MAY-A conquered on and made the most out of it, managing to begin her rise despite the chaos surrounding her. If anything, it was a huge benefit… “It was a really important year for me, especially with personal growth. I think I needed a lot of that time to be alone and stuck to almost be forced to make music.” She tells me over zoom pondering for a moment when I ask her, which is fair enough as 2020 seems to just blur into one big… bleh? “Covid obviously was terrible, but being in isolation it helped me tap into this other creative side that I didn’t know I really had. It helped me work harder, forced me to be introspective and helped me reflect on what was going on around me. Outside of Covid, it was an interesting year… I lost a lot of friends, and I gained a lot of new friends. I started to realise what was important and what I really care about.”

What is the next step for MAY-A? Like any artist, she just wants to keep being creative, and keep putting out music she loves. She excitedly tells me there is an EP on the way, happy she finally will have a place to put songs she has held onto for some time. “I secretly just want to drop it now so I can get it all out there! Someone joked with me the other day saying I should just release a google drive folder with every song on it so I don’t have to worry about them anymore!” she laughs to me… “I really am honing in on my creativity for that because I want it to be a statement piece. That’s the main focus on what’s next.”
